Christianity is not one option on a shelf of religions, something you subscribe to because it appeals to you. The word Christian was first used by outsiders to describe what they observed in the disciples of the Lord Jesus. At its root, to be a Christian is simply to be a disciple of the Lord Jesus.
To be a Christian is to become a child of God, with unhindered access to a God who loves you more than anything in the world. This relationship brings peace, purpose, and everlasting relationship with God into your life. Nothing else compares to it. And it is free, thanks to the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus.
Why does this matter?
The Bible teaches that God the Father, your Creator, made human beings to be His children, to be His family on earth. He gave people a free will, real moral freedom, and with that freedom came the possibility of choosing wrong. Humanity drifted away from God, and through that disobedience, sin entered the world.
Sin brought spiritual death: separation from God. That separation is the root of all the suffering, pain, evil and sickness we still see in our world today.
God is not only your loving Father — He is also the judge of the universe. The Bible teaches that the Lord Jesus will return to judge the world, and everyone will give an account of what they have done in the body. The consequence of sin is death and everlasting punishment.
God's solution
The Lord Jesus is God's solution to all of this.
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." — John 3:16
None of this came without cost. God's only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus, gave His life for you on the cross and shed His blood for the remission of sins, so that the sin which separates you from God could be forgiven freely.
Through what the Lord Jesus has done, you can receive everlasting life instead of everlasting punishment. Your sins are forgiven, and He gives you a new heart so that you can live in righteousness, purpose and a life fruitful and pleasing to God. Though you were dead in sin, God recreates your spirit and places His own Spirit within your heart: old things pass away, and you become a new person, as though you had never committed those sins — all washed away, remembered by Him no more. You begin a new spiritual life and journey with God — unhindered access to, and fellowship with, the Most High God: the greatest conceivable Being, all-loving and all-powerful. This is a deep, rich spiritual experience you are being invited into.
Christianity is a relationship with God that was once impossible, but has been made possible by the sacrifice of His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus.
You have got nothing to lose. But everything to gain.
