Water baptism is the first public step of obedience after you put your faith in the Lord Jesus. It is a clear declaration that your old life belongs to the past and that you now intend to walk with Christ.
What water baptism declares
In baptism, a believer identifies with the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Going down into the water pictures the burial of the old life. Rising from the water pictures the new life God has given you.
"Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." - Romans 6:4
Baptism is not a performance or a claim that you have become perfect. It is an act of faith and obedience: you are confessing that Jesus Christ is Lord and that you belong to Him.
Why it follows faith
Throughout the book of Acts, people who believed the gospel were baptized without treating it as a distant milestone. Those who received the word on the day of Pentecost were baptized (Acts 2:41). The Ethiopian believer asked to be baptized as soon as he understood and believed the gospel (Acts 8:36-38). Cornelius and his household were also commanded to be baptized (Acts 10:47-48).
The pattern is simple: hear the gospel, believe in the Lord Jesus, and respond in obedience.
How to take this step
Speak with a Bible-believing church, pastor, or mature Christian who can help you be baptized according to Scripture. Tell them plainly that you have put your faith in the Lord Jesus and want to obey Him in water baptism.
You do not need an elaborate ceremony. What matters is your sincere faith in Christ, your willingness to confess Him openly, and baptism in water as the Scriptures describe.
After your baptism
Water baptism marks a beginning, not an ending. Continue in prayer, Scripture, fellowship, and obedience. When you are tempted to return to your former way of life, remember what your baptism declared: the old life was buried, and you have risen to walk with the Lord Jesus.
